The Launch of the Langebaan
Biker Boys Cycling project was hosted by the Langebaan
Country Estate on Monday the 20th Of October. Elton Davids
Vice Chairperson of the Pedal Power Association officially
launched the project and offered some encouraging words to
our future cyclists.
The
Pedal Power Association recently announced the approval of
funding of more than R1,6 million for seventeen new
cycling projects. This goes a long way in fulfilling the
PPA's constitution in promoting cycling in all its forms.
The Langebaan Biker Boys will be benefiting from some of
this funding through the Langebaan Biker Boys Argus Cycle
Tour 2009 project.
The programme is aimed at
introducing youths from previously disadvantaged communities
in Langebaan to the joys of cycling, aiming at completing
the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour in 2009. This will
assist in alleviating a desperate need for a structured
cycling initiative in the Langebaan community. The vision is
to create a sustainable environment for the youths to freely
participate in activities ensuring up-liftment and growth,
whereby they reverse the current trend of misuse of drugs,
gangsterism and hopelessness. Through the programme, various
life awareness skills will also be taught.
This project is the
brainchild of two local Langebaan cyclists and community
members. Alan Cotton of LIVE2RIDE
and Justin Maltby of
The
Strandloper who have been active in promoting cycling in
the Langebaan community and have noticed a desperate need
for a structured cycling initiative. The Langebaan Biker
Boys are an inspirational group of youngsters here in
Langebaan. Under the guidance of Julian Engelbrecht they
have achieved great success so far and have bold plans to
develop their organisation into a successful youth life
awareness program. They use sport as the vehicle and have
chosen cycling as one of their main activities.
According to Alan and Justin,
they see this organisation as an ideal platform through
which a project of this nature can be established and
driven. The boys and organisation have shown incredible
commitment and potential by attending local pre-Argus
training rides on borrowed and broken bikes. Using the right
equipment and guidance the objective of completing Argus
Cycle Tour 2009 is achievable.
The boys received fully
sponsored Raleigh Ridge mountain bikes fitted with cycling
computers, spares, pumps and water bottles. Over the next 5
months they will follow a structured training program to
make sure that they are fit and ready to complete the Argus
Cycle Tour in March 2009. Their first goal is to take part
in the West Coast
Cycle Tour in December. The successful completion of
this project will lay the foundation for a future ongoing
development initiative of this nature.
The project is sponsored by
Pedal
Power Association and being run by
LIVE2RIDE Mountain Bike Experience
and
The Strandloper Seafood Restaurant together with P.L.A.Y.
(Parents Lobbying for an Active Youth)
